That geography surprises people: the mountain is easiest to reach by air from the south side, not from the road that carries the park’s name.

It names the Great Gorge at the Ruth Glacier, a mile-high granite wall holding a 4,000-foot-thick river of ice, the Don Sheldon amphitheater from the air, and the snow-capped peaks of the range. The ice is an add-on you choose.

105 minutes, twice over. $525 goes into the heart of the range for the east and west faces, Kahiltna as the longest glacier in the park, the glaciers of the southside, and the sister peaks Hunter and Foraker; the ice is an upgrade. $544 spends the same 105 minutes differently: Little Switzerland, the 44-mile Kahiltna, Moose’s and Bear’s Tooth, the Ruth Glacier and the Great Gorge — and then it lands.

120 minutes — $475. The only listing that crosses to the north side, where it names the alpine tundra inside the park and the Wickersham Wall, which its own description calls the greatest continual vertical relief in the world. It is also the most reviewed flight here, at 178.

Reading the per-hour column. $202.67 an hour on the 90-minute flight, $237.50 on the two-hour one, $300.00 and $310.86 on the 105-minute pair, and $335.00 on the hour. An hour or two is short. These are the practical things that decide whether you come home with the range or with a phone full of window reflections.

Sit before you shoot. The first minutes are over the river, the flats and the forest; the range arrives afterwards. People who spend the approach fiddling with a camera miss the moment the scale changes, and that moment is most of what a Denali flightseeing tour is selling.
